the couple's problem could've been a non-issue if they only regarded the light as a life and death issue, which precedes the law of the Sabbath.

Jewish law allows to employ a non-Jew to wait in the hall on weekends, turning the light on and off as needed, preventing Jews from building a fire and desecrating the Sabbath. (building a fire is work, work is not allowed on the Sabbath, fire=electricity, turning on an electical device=creating new fire=work, therefore not allowed)
no, the solution is not hiring someone to sit in the hall for 24 hours on weekends, the solution is bringing a religious figure to officialy convert the motion sensor to a religion other than Judaism.
(declaring the sensor atheist won't do as it is possible to be a religiously Jewish atheist)
