Soccers proper name is Association Football which its creators nicknamed soccer so it would not be confused with the rugby like games played at that time (1863).
The term football does not mean kicking the ball but comes from medieval times where the aristocracy played games on horseback and the peasants played games on foot - hence football is a ball game played on foot.
Note that soccer is not the oldest football code. That goes to Australian Rules Football which was the first football game to be codified - having an official set of rules and governing body. One of the AFL teams founded then still survives today.
One final word - Australian Rules Football is not a religion - it is far more important than that.
